Are we neglecting the human side of layoffs?

I’ve been receiving personal calls and messages from students sharing their worries about entering the job market, work visa holders are anxious about their security not only for their job but also their residency in the US without advanced notice, moms who were laid off while having young children to raise and disheartened about their prospects to return to the workforce.

I’m not an expert on this subject. I’m simply another human being who feels heartbroken to see others being treated without enough respect and care during layoffs. Even though it may be a business decision, shouldn’t we at least strive to treat each other as human rather than just another cost to be eliminated? And even though having resilience is important, how much resilience needs to be tested before people reach their mental health breaking point?
